Eco TV

Philippe Starck ‘Jim Nature’, eco-TV 1994

Knock on wood - what was standard for TV sets in the middle of the last century was forgotten years later when they were all made of plastic. Here, a French designer and architect used resin impregnated sawdust and wood powder in place of the typical injection molded plastic housing. Although the resin soaked wood chip composite that was used for the case is not as easily recyclable, at least he used materials that would otherwise be considered waste. Giving it a catchy name and colors that communicated its eco-friendliness may have helped it become a model for a new look in consumer electronic design.
