Hanging Lamp

Mario Bellini    Area Lamp 1974

Light waves - this is how best to describe this astonishingly simple lamp. Its Italian architect-designer creator developed this beautiful origami-like light sculpture with a simple, but highly effective trick. He used a soft square synthetic parchment with a fixture-sized hole in the middle and smartly forced it into a wavy shape by the ondulated brim of the light fixture. The result is impressively natural and light in appearance. Best used with a half mirror bulb to avoid being blinded when you look at it from the side. It will cast an agreeably reflected light on your table. There is even a donut-shaped weight in the cable loop above the table to make it height-adjustable. It is hard to imagine how the genius behind the lamp could have achieved a more impressive spatial statement and light quality with less material or effort.
