Gunpei Yokoi       Nintendo    1989                                                                     Whether you wanted to chase an Italian plumber through a fungal kingdom or properly stack Russian building blocks without gaps, you had to have one of these fantastic handheld devices to achieve your goal. The Japanese company, founded in the 1800s as a manufacturer of playing cards, branched out into the electronic gaming world in the early 1970s. But only with the improved ergonomics of the so-called D-pad design with its trademark cross-shaped direction button and its removable cartridges that allowed different games on one piece of hardware, did the company became a worldwide success. Two weeks after product launch, all units were sold. Today more than one hundred million devices have been scooped up by enthusiastic consumers. It still dominates the mobile gaming market.
